Definition Prussia was a "German" (as far as that term is appropriate for the early modern period) state which originated as a duchy in the 16th century. It grew territorially to include Brandenburg, and in 1701 became a kingdom. Throughout the 18th century, the rulers of the Hohenzollern dynasty steadily increased the state's importance. Frederick I and Frederick II alias "Frederick the Great" turned it into an important military player in Europe and greatly enlarged its power. Prussia became an absolutist monarchy under Frederick the Great.en
