Definition The Ottoman Empire was a state founded by Osman I in Western Anatolia in the 14th century. After power was consolidated, the conquest of Constantinople (which then became Istanbul) in 1453 led to a period of territorial and cultural expansion. In the early modern period, the Ottoman Empire expanded even more drastically, dominating large parts of the Mediterranean Sea.en
