Definition The Saramacca are one of six Maroon peoples in the Republic of Suriname. The ancestors of the Saramacca were among those Africans sold as plantation slaves to Europeans in Suriname in the late 17th and early 18th Centuries. Maroon means that the slaves eventually escaped their bondage.en
