Definition The United States of America are located on the North American continent. They emerged as a joint nation during the War of American Independence (1775-1783). The war was a result of settler colonies striving for independence from British rule. Various colonists from diverse regions had attempted to settle different parts of the North American continent since the medieval period. Since the late 15th century, Spanish, French and English colonists had repeatedly made efforts to establish themselves on the lands which belonged to various indigenous peoples. When colonisation became a priority in European policies in the course of the 17th and 18th centuries, these efforts became more and more organised and determined. English (from 1707 onwards: British), Spanish and French settlements were created successively, aggressing and/or engaging with the indigenous population in different ways. In the course of the various wars and conflicts between the European powers in the course of the 17th and 18th centuries, England (Britain) emerged as the dominant colonial power.en
