Definition | Sugar is a crystalline product mainly consisting of sucrose. The brown, or in its pure condition white colored product, is mainly obtained from the sugar cane and sugar beet. In a large extent the agricultural plants have been cultivated on plantations since the early modern period. Colonialism around the mass cultivation of sugar changed the transatlantic world like hardly any other trade commodity Sugar, especially from the Americas, was a key colonial commodity in the 18th century. Enslaved people were used on the plantations to harvest the sugar cane.en |
